What is Email?

Email is a word that comes from English, email contains the meaning of electronic mail. Email is referred to as a means of sending letters via computer network lines (eg the Internet).

By using email, we can send messages electronically between one party and another using the internet as an intermediary medium. This means, if in the past the letters we sent reached the recipient’s hands as soon as the day after they were sent, now we can send messages in just seconds.

Besides being able to be used to send messages or letters. Now email is also used as a requirement when registering for several social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and so on. It can be said that nowadays almost all people must have an email.


In fact, email is also used as a person’s personal identity. So you can give your email address to relatives or other people who need your contact when they want to be contacted.

Email History

Electronic mail or better known as email, has started to be used around the 1960s. At that time the internet was not yet formed, there was only a collection of “mainframes” formed as a network. Email can only be enjoyed by the general public in the 1980s.

The concept of this email was first put forward by Ray Tomlinson in late 1971. Ray at that time worked for Bolt Beranek and Newman “BBN” belonging to the American defense agency, a company contracted by the United States Department of Defense to build the ARPANET.

At first, Ray experimented with a computer program called SNDMSG which at that time was used to leave messages on computers, so that people using computers could read messages left by computer users. At that time it was normal when many people used the same computer interchangeably.

Not quite there, Ray did the next experiment by connecting SNDMSG via a file protocol called CYPNET so that the SNDMSG program could send messages to other computers, but still in the same ARPANET network.

In 1971, Ray sent the first e-mail message and became the world’s first e-mail message. Unfortunately, the content of the message that was sent by Ray in the form of “test words” was completely forgotten, maybe the first message he sent was QWERTYUIOP or similar letters,” Ray said on his Flickr account.

In 1972, Ray introduced the @ symbol as an email identity to separate the user identity from the domain. In English the symbol “@” means AT which means “at”. That’s why all email addresses that we have always use the @ symbol before the domain, such as @gmail, @yahoo, and so on.

Email Type 

Some of the most commonly used types of email:

  • POP Mail 

POP stands for Post Office Protocol, it is used to sync email from Gmail to any compatible email client, such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Apple Mail. Like IMAP, POP is not a Google product; it is a standardized and RFC compliant protocol which can be selected to be compatible with any email client or service.

Gmail users can use normal mode or POP latest mode to sync their emails. If syncing your email to one email program, we recommend using normal mode.

If you’re syncing your email to several other email programs, we recommend using the latest mode. This type of email service is the type of email service most companies use to communicate internally with their employees.

  • Web Mail

Web mail is a type of web-based email service. Web mail is an e-mail service that can be accessed using a standard web browser. In addition, many internet service providers provide webmail as part of their internet service packages.

Similarly, some web hosting providers also provide webmail as part of their hosting packages. Some examples of webmail providers are AOL Mail, Gmail, GMX Mail, Mailfence, and others.

  • Forward Mail

Forward mail or email forwarding generally refers to the operation of resending email messages sent to one email address to one or more different email addresses. Usually, this type of email is very useful and much needed for those who change their email addresses frequently.

Email forwarding can also direct email to a specific address and send it to one or more other addresses. Vice versa, email items that go to several different addresses can meet through forwarding to end up in one address’s inbox.

How to Create Email

How to create a Gmail account:

  • Visit the site
  • Fill in your personal identity such as first name, last name and username that you want to use as your gmail address.
  • Create a password.

How to create a Yahoo account:

  • Yahoo will send a verification code via SMS
  • Enter verification code
  • Done, you can login using your Yahoo account.
