Do you often get documents in Microsoft Word file format, for example from the internet, from file attachments in emails sent to you or maybe someone else sent the document to you? When the document is opened, you can immediately find out the number of pages of the document you received. You then say to yourself it’s a quite long document with many pages.

You read to the end and find that there are several blank pages in the document. You then plan to edit as few sections as needed and at the same time delete some existing blank pages. You think that the blank pages in the Microsoft Word document would be better if they were deleted to make them tidy.

A blank page in a Microsoft Word document can be in the middle or at the end. Blank pages can be added intentionally, for example by inserting via Page Break on the Insert tab (Ctrl + Enter) or accidentally, for example blank pages at the end of the document due to non-printing Characters key presses such as Enter that are not realized.

In Microsoft Word, you can delete an existing blank page in a document in several ways. The examples in this article use the Microsoft Word 2019 application, but you can also use earlier versions of Microsoft Word in the same or nearly the same way:

1. Using the Navigation Pane.

To remove a blank page from a Microsoft Word document that is in the middle, you can use the Navigation Pane feature. Click the View tab (1) and in the Show group (2), place a check mark in the Navigation Pane (3) check box.

The Navigation sidebar then appears on the left showing thumbnails of all pages. Click the Page tab (1), use the slider (2) to find a blank page, click on a blank page (3) to select it and then press the Delete key or keyboard key to delete it.

2. Remove Page Breaks.

Page Break in Microsoft Word is a feature that allows you to start content on a new next page. Quite often, blank pages in Microsoft Word documents are generated by this manual Page Break feature. By default, Page Breaks are non-printing characters and are hidden. However, you can display a Page Break using the Paragraph Mark icon.

To display the presence of a Page Break in a Microsoft Word document, make sure the Home tab (1) is active, in the Paragraph group (2), click the Paragraph Mark icon (3).

To delete a Page Break, double click the Page Break to highlight or select it and then press the Delete key or keyboard key.

You can also delete multiple blank pages in a Microsoft Word document resulting from a Page Break through the Find and Replace dialog box. To quickly open the Find and Replace dialog box, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+H.

In the Find and Replace dialog box that appears, make sure the Replace (1) tab is active, in the Find what drop-down box, type ^m (2), leave the Replace with drop-down box blank (3) and then click the Replace All button (4).

In the Microsoft Word dialog box that appears next, click the OK button. This dialog box informs you that 4 Page Breaks have been removed.

3. Delete the blank page at the end of the document.

We often find a blank page at the end of a Microsoft Word document. This can be caused by non-printing characters, for example, by pressing the Enter key several times at the end of the document without realizing it.

Removing blank pages that are at the end of the document is not difficult. Display nonprinting characters first using Paragraph Mark as described above, highlight or select all unprinted characters and then press the Delete key or keyboard key.
